Tips to avoiding card trouble and corrupted files

Once you have safely stored your images on your computer, archived to CD or other media we strongly recommend that you format your memory card. This will help prevent it from becoming corrupted.

Formatting (sometimes also called initializing) deletes all images, files, directories and camera data and then sets up new folders and data on the card so you are ready to start taking photos again.

NOTE - It's important to format the card in your camera, not your computer.

If you have an issue viewing or accessing images on a memory card it is best to stop using the card immediately. Taking more photos, deleting or reformatting may just make it worse and may hinder any chance of recovering images later.

Do remove your card whilst it is still being accessed (this is when the camera is still writing information to the card after taking a photo) as it will almost certainly result in file corruption.

Keep your memory card away from magnets.

Avoid extreme temperatures.

Do not leave a card exposed to bright sunlight or humid conditions.

Invest in quality memory cards from a reputable manafacturer and dealer. Fake cards may be cheap but aren't your images worth the extra few dollars?
